The Life & Legacy of Our Founder
- Yugacharya Swami Pranavanandaji Maharaj
1896
Birth & Early Calling
Born on January 29, 1896, as Jaynath (affectionately known as Binod) in the village of Bajitpur. From a very young age, he displayed deep detachment from worldly life, a meditative temperament, and a profound inclination toward spirituality.
1913
Spiritual Initiation
At age 17, he visited Gorakhpur and met the revered saint Yogiraj Baba Gambhirnathji Maharaj, who formally initiated him into spiritual life. By the age of 20, he had attained deep self-realization through intense sadhana.
1917
Founding of the Sangha
Seeking to fuse deep spiritual practice with vast humanitarian service, he founded the Bharat Sevashram Sangha on the auspicious day of Maghi Purnima. His mission was to serve the poor, spread Hindu Dharma, and promote national unity.
1924
Embracing Monastic Vows
At the historic Allahabad Kumbh Mela, he took formal Sanyas (monastic vows) from Swami Govindananda Giri, officially taking the name Swami Pranavananda. He began initiating his own disciples, building a dedicated monastic order.
1941 & Beyond
Mahasamadhi & Legacy
Swami Pranavananda passed away on January 8, 1941, at the young age of 44. His extraordinary legacy continues today through the Sangha's global network of ashrams, hospitals, schools, and relentless humanitarian efforts.
Service Highlights
Pioneering Disaster Relief
The Sangha has been at the forefront of national crises since the 1920s. We have provided rapid, unconditional aid during the catastrophic Bengal famine of 1943, modern earthquakes in Gujarat, tsunamis, frequent floods across coastal regions, and most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. Our monks and volunteers risk their lives to deliver food, medical supplies, and temporary shelters directly to ground zero.
Comprehensive Healthcare
We firmly believe that access to healthcare is a fundamental right. Through the establishment of major multi-specialty non-profit hospitals (like the BSS Hospital in Kolkata), hundreds of charitable dispensaries, and mobile medical units, we ensure that advanced diagnostics and critical care reach the most marginalized and remote populations completely free or at subsidized costs.
Education & Tribal Empowerment
Eradicating illiteracy and empowering youth is central to our mission. We manage an extensive network of Pranavananda Vidyamandir schools, student hostels, and vocational training centers across India. We specifically focus on uplifting tribal communities, integrating them into the mainstream by providing skill development and supporting self-help groups (SHGs).
National Integration & Harmony
Swami Pranavananda envisioned a united, strong India. Through the establishment of 'Milan Mandirs' (unity centers), we actively work to eradicate untouchability and foster spiritual and cultural harmony among different communities. Additionally, our mass pilgrim support services at major events like Kumbh Mela and Amarnath Yatra ensure safety and spiritual fulfillment for millions.
